Biography

Dr Sean Chang serves as Associate Professor of Practice at Saint Francis University, Hong Kong, providing academic and research in Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Financial Analytics and advanced AI finance associated courses.  Before joining SFU, Dr Chang is the Associate Professor of Practice in Finance at The University of Hong Kong.

More than 30 years of investment management experience have been accumulated in global fixed income, equity and multi-asset strategies, together with over 15 years of specialised expertise in public and private global investments, sustainability, and green finance. Strategic decision-making has been exercised with particular specialisation in asset allocation, risk management and corporate governance across senior roles including Co-Chief Investment Officer at Value Partners, Executive Director at Ping An of China Asset Management with governance of overseas fund umbrellas, Head of Asia Debt Investment at Barings, and Investment Director at HSBC Asset Management.  Multi-billion-dollar mandates have been managed, sustainable products launched, Sustainability-integrated risk processes implemented, and recognition received through multiple Most Astute Fixed Income awards from The Asset. Oversight has been maintained on research, investment and risk committees, including first- and second-line defense frameworks in top leading global asset managers.

Teaching

Prior service as Associate Professor of Practice at The University of Hong Kong (2023–2026) encompassed academic discipline in corporate finance, impact investing, green and sustainability finance, together with research specialisation encompassed social responsibility, the social-policy implications of financial systems, and the maximisation of social value alongside shareholder value.

Dr Chang as Lecturer in Finance at the Hang Seng University (2023) focus his academic area in corporate finance and business ethics.  He provided research and seminars in portfolio management, green finance, sustainability finance, and in the Islamic finance areas.  

Research

Research works currently conduct on controversial industries which valuation impacts and shareholder value enhancement by increasing social contribution, pursuing sustainable transformation, and strengthening risk governance, including through AI-supported compliance protocols. It proposes that while strict ESG exclusion may persist, these actions can partially recover valuation by lowering perceived regulatory, reputational, and litigation risks among investors focused on financial materiality.

Professional accreditations include CPA Australia, Ordinary Member of the Hong Kong Securities Institute (HKSI), Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA), Certified ESG Planner (CEP), and Supporting Member of the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA). SFC Responsible Officer and Representative licences (Types 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9) held at leading investment institutions.

Academic qualifications include a Doctor of Business Administration (Valuation and Covenant) from Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Master of Finance degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, a Master of Law degree and Master of Social Science in Government and Politics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Selected Publications

Dr Chang's research on the Maximisation of Social Value and Shareholder Value – Insights from Hong Kong listed Companies Across Sectors (HKU Business School, Hong Kong Economic Policy Green Paper 2026).  The thematic study on Social Value and Shareholder Value, which examined how social policies, international frameworks, and corporate social responsibility influence firm valuation and capital budgeting (incorporating core social values such as equality, human rights, health and work safety, and sustainability), together with related analysis of corporate finance decisions in the context of social policy and socially responsible investing.

Dr Chang's research enriched the bond valuation literature by examining the influence of covenants on the pricing of greater China bonds. His research paper, Debt covenants and credit spread valuation: The special case of Chinese global bonds (2016), examines the impact of bond covenants on credit spread valuation and the configural cue processing of analysts in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis at the beginning of the 2011 China economic slowdown.  He presented his research works at academic conferences in China and published his key research findings at Global Finance Journal.
