Prof Stephen CHEUNG Yan-leung, President of Saint Francis University (SFU), published a commentary article in the Hong Kong Economic Times on the future development of Universities of Applied Sciences recently. In the article, Prof CHEUNG highlighted that Hong Kong's higher education system has long prioritised traditional academic pathways, with the development and role of vocational and professional education being relatively neglected. He proposed that alongside traditional universities and vocational education, universities of applied sciences offer students a 'third track'.
Prof CHEUNG proposed establishing a dual-mentor system involving both academic institutions and enterprises, recommending that the government create a seed fund to facilitate this mechanism. This dual-mentor approach would not only enhance students' employability but also shorten the talent cultivation cycle for businesses.
