RTHK programme interview with Acting President Prof LO Tit Wing on the Development of University of Applied Scences in Hong Kong

Prof LO Tit Wing, Acting President of the Saint Francis University (SFU), was interviewed by the RTHK programme "Accountability" on 22 February 2025 (Saturday) about the development of the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Hong Kong. Prof Paul LAM, President of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, was also present.

Prof LO pointed out that as a UAS, SFU emphasizes on Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET), focuses on the development of the practical ability of students, and recognizes their work experience. At the same time, SFU would not omits humanities and liberal arts edcation, but focus on relevant applications, such as translation technology.

On the topic of how to improve the perception of UAS of the public, especially parents, Prof LO said that the salaries of graduates of UAS professional programmes, such as nursing, physiotherapy, social work, were not lower than those of traditional universities, and he hoped that the work of the Alliance of UAS could change the concept of the public over time.

He also mentioned that SFU is piloting a dual-track model to allow DSE candidates to study an ICT diploma programme at Qualifications Framework Level 3 in parallel with the DSE, and have an option to apply for a relevant sub-degree programme at SFU after the DSE, providing them with multiple pathways, and this model is expected to be extended to other disciplines in the future.
