Interview on Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Policy

25 Feb 2025
Prof WONG Yu Cheung, Dean of the Felizberta Lo Padilla Tong School of Social Sciences, SFU, attended an event on Hong Kong poverty alleviation on 23 February 2025, and proposed a number of suggestions. Prof Wong pointed out that the Government has been announcing the poverty line since 2013 and ceased to do so from 2021. However, the announcement of the poverty line is not in conflict with its strategy of targeted poverty alleviation, and the establishment of the poverty line will enable the Government to identify the population that are most in need, such as subdivided unit households, elderly households, unemployed households, and families with disabled members, and thus enable the Government to carry out targeted poverty alleviation in a more effective manner.
