The Saint Francis University (SFU) will launch 2 new programmes, namely the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Crime and Security Science (BSCSS) and the Higher Diploma in Crime and Security Science (HDCSS) in the 2025-26 academic year. Prof LO Tit Wing, Acting President of SFU; Dr Anthony WONG and Dr HANG Ching Nam, Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of the Yam Pak Charitable Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, SFU; Prof Dennis WONG and Mr Stephen SO, External Advisers of the programmes, were interviewed by HK01 recently to introduce the contents and features of the two new programmes.

Prof LO Tit Wing pointed out that the new programmes respond to the demand for relevant talents in the society, focusing the application of science and various technologies to prevent and investigate crimes, and to enhance their security capabilities by implementing Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Block Chain, and could be distinguished from existing social sciences or law based programmes.

Dr Anthony WONG mentioned that graduates of the programme can engage in different industries. With reference to the Tech industry, which has been in great demand for talent in recent years, the estimated starting salary of future graduates should be above $20,000, which is above the overall average. It is also believed that the programmme can facilitate the promotion and pay raise of students who are already working in the industry.

Dr HANG Ching Nam said graduates of the HDCSS programme have diverse articulation pathways. Apart from the BSCSS programme, the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence (BSAI) and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Digital Entertainment Technology (BSDET) are also possible options.

Prof Dennis WONG is an internationally renowned criminologist, he described that more than half of the programmme content is on digital technology, while the rest involves various social science theories and data, and it is similar to a double-degree programme while combining the two fields. Students will be able to apply their knowledge to the management and operation of various industries, which will be helpful for their future career and promotion.

Mr Stephen SO is a retired Superintendent of the Hong Kong Police Force, he believes that this programme combines theory and practice, including Police daily work such as crime investigation techniques, risk management and cyber security, and is suitable for police officers to promote or transfer to departments such as the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, the Commercial Crime Bureau and the Criminal Intelligence Bureau.
