Saint Francis University (SFU) supported the Hong Kong Archives Society in organising The International Archives Week 2025, and presented a collection of valuable documents, including the Oxford Master's thesis of Bishop Francis HSU (1920-1973), the third Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, and early Hong Kong social work publications to introduce their historical significance to the public.
SFU was named Caritas Francis Hsu College when it was established in 1985 in memory of Bishop Francis HSU, founder of the higher education system of Cartias Hong Kong. Bishop HSU obtained his Master of Arts degree from the University of Oxford in 1948. The title of his thesis was 'Biography in the Nineteenth Century as Illustrated by Seven Biographies of English Men of Letters', examining the characteristics of biographical literature in the 19th century. The thesis was presented to Mr HSIUNG Shih-I, a well-known writer, dramatist, and a close friend of Bishop HSU, and it was later donated to SFU by his family in August 2024, while HSIUNG's dramatic manuscripts were also generously lent to SFU for academic research and exhibitions.
SFU's collection of early Hong Kong social work publications included the first publication of its kind, 'Grassroots', published by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service in 1979, and the subsequent issues. These publications were the main platform for social workers to exchange experiences at that time, and covered theoretical discussions, service experiences and introduction to western social work. They have preserved the precious history of community development and grassroots life in Hong Kong from the 1970s to the early 1990s, and provided valuable first-hand information for researchers interested in exploring the development and changes of society.
