SFU Hosts Second 'Strive for Self-excellence' Distinguished Talk Professor Stephen Cheung in Dialogue with Professor Frederick Ma

Saint Francis University (SFU) hosted its second "Strive for Self-excellence" Distinguished Talk today to mark the beginning of the new academic year. Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), was the keynote speaker, joining SFU President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung in a dialogue session titled "Cross-disciplinary Dialogue: New Opportunities for Hong Kong's Economy and Application-Oriented Talent". The event attracted a large turnout of SFU students and staff.
Professor Cheung and Professor Ma crossed paths at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The two leaders shared insights on Hong Kong's economic trajectory, talent development, and the role of education in responding to evolving social and economic needs.

Professor Ma is a prominent figure with extensive experience in the public and business sectors, having joined the Government in 2002 and served as a Principal Official of the HKSAR Government. Professor Ma has long been an advocate of education, stressing its importance to the development of young people. In his remarks, Professor Ma encouraged students to embrace the spirit of self-excellence embodied in the "Lion Rock Spirit", explore with courage, and pursue continuous improvement, laying a strong foundation for their future development.

Professor Ma said, "The international trade and economic landscape is facing considerable uncertainty. As an international trade and business hub, Hong Kong's economy is evolving rapidly and needs more professionals with applied competence and an international outlook. Applied sciences education nurtures professionals who combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, helping to meet the needs of economic and social development."

He continued, "I am delighted to exchange views with the SFU students and staff, especially in the direction of talent development in Hong Kong. I hope the younger generation will continue to strive for excellence, broaden their horizons and seize the opportunities arising from Hong Kong's future development."

Professor Cheung said, "A new academic year brings new hope and challenges. As a pioneer in applied sciences education, SFU will continue to strengthen its unique role in the field and deepen collaboration with industry partners. We are committed to providing education opportunities that integrate theory and practice, and enabling students to equip themselves and respond to societal needs."

He added, "The 'Strive for Self-excellence' Distinguished Talk Series offers our students a platform for dialogue with leaders from different sectors. We are honoured to welcome Professor Ma on this occasion, and we trust that our students will draw inspiration from his sharing, reflect on their aspirations, embrace new opportunities and pursue their goals with confidence."
