The Saint Francis University (SFU) has been responding to the needs of the community by nurturing healthcare professionals, relieving the pressure on the public healthcare system, and offering tertiary education programmes that meet the expectations of students for further studies and employment. The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physiotherapy (BSc (Hons) PT) programme of the SFU has obtained professional accreditation from the Supplementary Medical Professions Council, and the upcoming graduates will be qualified for registration as physiotherapists and practise in Hong Kong.
Prof LO Tit Wing, the Acting President of the SFU, sincerely thanked the Supplementary Medical Professions Council for awarding the professional accreditation to the programme and pledged that the SFU would continue to contribute to the community by nurturing future medical talents with both professionalism and ethics.
Prof Eric CHAN, Dean of the S.K. Yee School of Health Sciences of the SFU, said the academic staff will continue to strive for excellence in training outstanding physiotherapists for the community. He also thanked the Education Bureau for allocating HK$32 million to the SFU to establish a Physiotherapy Clinic and a Community Primary Care Centre, and also a Physiotherapy Simulation Laboratory, in order to provide better physiotherapy services to the community, and at the same time the preparation of students for clinical practicum can be strengthened, thus enhancing the practicum effectiveness.
Professor Arran LEUNG, Programme Leader of the BSc (Hons) PT programme, claimed that the funding is significant as the additional resources are used to establish partnership with more community healthcare organisations, so that students will have the opportunity to provide physiotherapy services to the local communities, and can frequently expose to simulated clinic settings and patient cases prior to their clinical practicum, thus preparing them to contribute to the community in their practicum and practice.
The SFU has offered BSc (Hons) PT programme since the 2020/21 academic year, and has been included in the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) since the 2021/22 academic year. The Joyce M Kuok Foundation has donated 2 million to the programme for four consecutive years since 2021 to award admission scholarships to students who have obtained outstanding academic results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) and are dedicated to studying physiotherapy, and special scholarships to students with excellent academic results and bursaries to students who face financial difficulties.
