President's views and perspectives on SFU's development and potential of UAS

19 Jan 2026

SFU President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung attended a talk show of Commercial Radio "Beautiful Sunday" yesterday (January 18), sharing his views and perspectives on the latest development of the University and its unique role as a pioneer in Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) within Hong Kong's higher education system.

He stressed SFU's relentless commitment to helping students from grassroots families to move up in social strata and nurturing vocational professionals equipped with both academic knowledge and practical skills to meet the talent needs of China and Hong Kong.

Professor Cheung added that local higher education has been geared towards academic research and theoretical pursuits, but he believed academic knowledge and career orientation should be of equal importance in our education system. This, he said, set the context for the UAS concept, which has been introduced in Hong Kong recently to fill the gap. With an increasing number of international and mainland companies establishing a foothold in the local market, Professor Cheung saw a strong demand for multi-faceted talents, and the enormous opportunities for UAS to help contribute to Hong Kong's transformation as a regional talent hub.

Another topic highlighted during the interview was the promotion of AI-plus to better equip SFU students to make effective use of technology while upholding ethics. Also close to the heart of Professor Cheung was the whole-person development of students, who should value traditional virtues and strive for self-excellence, guided by the University's motto.
