01 Oct 2026
To celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Saint Francis University (SFU) held a solemn flag-raising ceremony on campus to strengthen staff and students' national consciousness and ethnic identity, and to foster patriotism and affection for Hong Kong.
The ceremony was conducted by a flag-raising team comprising students from different schools of the University. The Chairman and members of the Council, senior management, staff and students attended together to witness this solemn and meaningful occasion.
Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, President of SFU, said, "Today marks the important 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. By holding this flag-raising ceremony, the University not only pays high tribute to the nation, but also hopes to guide staff and students towards a deeper understanding of the country's development achievements and future direction, thereby strengthening national identity and the courage to take up the mission of our times. SFU will continue to leverage its strengths as a University of Applied Sciences to nurture talent with both professional competence and a strong sense of commitment to the country and Hong Kong, contributing to Hong Kong's integration into national development."
This year, unlike in previous years, the flag-raising team appeared in new uniforms, projecting a dignified and disciplined image. SFU also received support from the Tseung Kwan O Police District, which deployed officers to serve as coaches for the flag-raising team. They provided systematic training in Chinese-style foot drill and flag-raising protocol, helping students deepen their understanding of ceremonial standards, enhance teamwork and a sense of responsibility, and strengthen their understanding of and belonging to the nation.
