On-campus classes of primary and secondary schools remain suspended due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Prof. Ho Man Koon, Professor from the School of Humanities and Languages of Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE), has created an online Chinese learning website to cater for the learning needs of kindergarten, primary and secondary school students.
His first attempt can be traced back to as early as 2003, the outbreak of SARS. At that time, it used to record a daily hit rate up to as much as 260,000. 17 years passed, he would like to continue his efforts to facilitate teaching and learning during citywide suspension of classes. The platform allows teachers who struggle to deliver face-to-face teaching, to arrange online activities for their students in learning Chinese vocabulary, reading and writing. Students, on the other hand, can continue their learning and enjoy the joy of reading and learning at home.
Apart from his role as the Research Professor at CIHE, Prof. Ho is also the founder of "A passage a Day", a Chinese language reading scheme. Developed in 2002, the web reading scheme enables students to learn Chinese outside classroom, improving their reading and writing skills. Not only does this popular online platform benefit students in learning Chinese and nurturing their reading habits, but it also helps teachers increase their teaching effectiveness by monitoring their students' learning online.
Adherent to the Institute's vision in supporting disadvantaged students, Prof. Ho devotes himself to helping pupils with special education needs. He has been successfully awarded government's research funding to design teaching materials for dyslexic and under-performed students in learning Chinese.
