The Research Centre will build a small team of data scientist and engineers, to work on inter-disciplinary and applied data science research problem, with a focus on the social policies and services area initially. We collaborate with faculty members and research staff at SFU as well as other institutions. We also seek to work with NGOs and other government and non-government organizations that are involved with social services and policies, have data and real-world problems. The goal is to not only publish academic papers, but also make real-world impact.
Mission
The mission of the Data Science Research Center (DSRC) is to help expand the research capability of SFU by cultivating and supporting research in this inter-disciplinary area. Initially, the focus will be in the social services and social policy area, as this is a well-established academic area for SFU, and SFU has good connections to the social services community. Our goal is to do applied, innovative and socially meaningful research by applying data science methodologies to the social science area.
