Since my childhood, I have been wondering the being and meaning of the Universe as well as our Human Life. I am eager to explore the basic principles and the ultimate value of all these phenomena. After I have read more and more since secondary school, I found out that Philosophy is the thing interests me most and I decided to pursue my dream of being an investigator in the field of philosophy. Afterwards I obtained my Ph.D in philosophy from the Department of Philosophy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and have been obsessed with the promotion, teaching, study and research of philosophy ever since.
My doctoral research topic was the comparison between the ethical thought of Catholic philosopher Max Scheler and Ming dynasty Confucian Wang Yang-ming. My research interests focus on comparative philosophy of Chinese and Western thoughts, and also on the Chinese mainstream philosophies (Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism). Often involved in public talks and lectures, I have been promoting the ideas in Chinese philosophies and religions, in hope of sharing the benefits of traditional wisdom with the general public. In addition, I have been accredited by the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA) as a certified philosophical counsellor. This encouraged me, on the one hand, to involve in volunteer works of counselling in past years and, on the other, to explore theoretically the potential power of Chinese philosophy in counselling work.
Listening to classical music is my greatest enjoyment in my spare time. In the different art forms, music is a very special one. It unfolds itself in the dimension of time, nevertheless hypnotizes the listener to forget about the time, letting the listener just intuiting the form and feeling in the here and now.
Since studying in graduate school, I have taught in a number of tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, lecturing on philosophy and general education subjects, for nearly two decades of experience. For me, teaching is pleasurable in a twofold way, firstly I can stimulate students to think and understand some abstract or difficult ideas in a vivid and convincing way, and secondly both me and my students can learn more in the interactions in discussions and debates, experimenting what me and my students have learnt in philosophizing together.
Here are some courses that I teach:
My research interests include Chinese Philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, Ethics, Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, Ken Wilber's Integrated Philosophy, and Philosophical Counselling.
At present, what I am doing focuses on the philosophical connotations of Zhuangzi, how to apply Wilber's integral philosophy and Chinese philosophy in the theory and practice of philosophical counselling, the ethics of heritage preservation, and philosophical reflections upon technology.
