Prof. Chan began his academic and teaching career as Lecturer in German and English and was then promoted to Associate Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he served for twenty years, before joining Teaching and Learning Centre at Lingnan University. After serving as Registrar of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation (HKCAA) for two years, Prof. Chan then returned to academic practice by joining Caritas Francis Hsu College as Head of the Department of Language Studies and Vice-President (Academic). He later joined Chu Hai College of Higher Education as Professor and Head of the English Department for ten years. In 2017, Prof. Chan 'returned' to Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE) as Professor of the Ip Ying To Lee Yu Yee School of Humanities and Languages.
Through all the years Prof. Chan has been teaching and developing a huge amount of instructional design projects and materials in such varied disciplines and subject areas as German Language, English for Professional Communication, Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Western Civilisation, and Nature and Living in Early Childhood Education, at both degree and sub-degree levels.

Principal Investigator of an Institutional Strategic Grant funded research project (2021-23) on Differentiated Instruction (DI) titled "Implementing Differentiated Instruction for College-level ESL Learners: A Case-based Action Research Study in Hong Kong" with a funding of HK$854,000.00.
