Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (2024)
Caritas Institute of Higher Education is pleased to announce the recipients of the Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (2024) (the Prize). The awardee of the area of Culture (2024) is Professor Maurizio Forte of Duke University; the awardee of the area of Language is Professor Wong Kam Fai of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and a Certificate of Commendation is awarded to Professor Hui Yuk of City University of Hong Kong.

The Recipients
The Prize in Culture -- Professor Maurizio Forte
Professor Forte is William and Sue Gross Professor of Classical Studies, Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University in the United States. He is a pioneer in digital archaeology, the founder of DIG@Lab at Duke, editor and author of many books and articles on virtual archaeology. The impact of his works is well-known internationally as a result of his research collaboration with scholars in the United States, Italy, China, India, Ethiopia, Honduras, Mexico, and Guatemala, among many others. He received several international awards, including the E-content Award in 2005 and 2008 respectively, and the Tartessos Prize on Virtual Archaeology (2010).
Professor Forte is selected for the Prize in the area of Culture for his life-long dedication and outstanding contribution to the study of digital archaeology and use of new digital methods in archaeology, art, art history, and the humanities.
The Prize in Language -- Professor Wong Kam Fai
Professor Wong, Professor and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, is a world-recognized researcher in Natural Language Processing (NLP), an elected Fellow of the Association of Computational Linguistics, and an Honorary Fellow of the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries. In 2011, he received the Medal of Honour from the HKSAR Government for his valuable contribution to the development of information, communication, and technology (ICT). He has published more than 250 papers and a number of books for the popularization of science.
Professor Wong is selected for the Prize in the area of Language for his outstanding contribution in Natural Language Processing (NLP), promotion of Asian NLP research, and popularization of science in Hong Kong.
The Certificate of Commendation (Culture) -- Professor Hui Yuk
Professor Hui is Professor of the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. He is a leading scholar on the philosophy of technology whose work has a global influence. He is known for his critical philosophical reflections on technology and for his notable concepts cosmotechnics and technodiversity. His books and articles have been translated into many languages for global consumption, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Norwegian, Czech, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
Professor Hui is selected to receive the Certificate of Commendation (Culture) for his great contribution to cultural and ecological thinking on contemporary life and society.
The Prize Presentation Ceremony
The prize presentation ceremony will be held at the campus of Caritas Institute of Higher Education on 4 January 2024. Each recipient of the Prize will be awarded a monetary award of US$15,000, a certificate, and a trophy. The recipient of the Certificate of Commendation will receive a monetary award of US$5,000 and a certificate.
