Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (2023) is now open for nomination
The Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (2023), first established by Caritas Institute of Higher Education in September 2021, is now open for nomination. This Prize is to be presented to individuals or institutions in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of technologies in the humanities for the well-being of humankind. The Prize areas for 2023 are Language and Culture.
The trophy of the Prize symbolizes glory with its body in gold, and a tall curvy frame in the shape of a bauhinia leaf. Techno-humanities is represented by a human-shaped base and a silver-coloured tube that stands for brain intelligence and technology. |

Professor CHAN Sin-wai (Chairperson)
Professor CHAN Sin-wai is Dean of the Ip Ying To Lee Yu Yee School of Humanities and Languages, Caritas Institute of Higher Education, President of the Association for Translation Technology, and was a member of the Translation Technology Committee of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).
He received his Bachelor of Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and his doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has taught courses in translation technology and computer-aided translation for many years. His research interests lie in translation technology, bilingual lexicography, and Chinese-English translation.
He has to date published 66 academic books in 85 volumes. His book publications on translation technology include The Human Factor in Machine Translation (Routledge 2018), The Future of Translation Technology: Towards a World without Babel (Routledge 2017), The Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Technology (Routledge 2015), 《翻譯科技新視野》(New Vistas in Translation Technology) (Tsinghua University Press 2014), The Teaching of Computer-aided Translation, Special Issue of the Journal of Translation Studies (Chinese University Press 2010), A Topical Bibliography of Computer (-aided) Translation (Chinese University Press, 2008), A Dictionary of Translation Technology (Chinese University Press, 2004), and Translation and Information Technology (The Chinese University Press 2002).
He played a key role in the establishment of the Techno-Humanities Research Centre at the Ip Ying To Lee Yu Yee School of Humanities and Languages of Caritas Institute of Higher Education in 2021 with a UGC funding of HK$3.94 million. He has conducted research projects on translation technology, the most recent ones include Creating an Automatic Football Commentary System with Image Recognition and Cantonese Voice Output (Co-Principal Investigator, with a RGC Funding of round HK$6.9 million in 2021) and VisualRecipe: An Online Visual Translation System for Chinese Cookbooks (Principal Investigator, funded in 2020 with an amount of around 2 million Hong Kong dollars by Caritas Institute of Higher Education).
Professor Leo LEE Ou-fan
Professor Leo LEE Ou-fan is an internationally renowned scholar whose main research areas are Chinese and Western literature and cultural studies. He has authored numerous books, with over a hundred publications to his name, including notable works such as The Romantic Generation of Modern Chinese Writers, Voices from the Iron House: A Study of Lu Xun and Shanghai Modern: The Emergence of a New Urban Culture in China 1930-1945.
Born in Henan and raised in Taiwan, Professor LEE graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University in 1961 and obtained a Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University in 1970. He has taught at various international institutions, including The Chinese University of Hong Kong (1970-1972, 2004-2019), Princeton University (1972-1976), Indiana University (1976-1982), The University of Chicago (1982-1990), UCLA (1990-1994), and Harvard University (1994-2004).
In 2022, Prof. LEE was offered an invitation by Prof. CHAN Sin-wai, the Dean of the Ip Ying To Lee Yu Yee School of Humanities and Languages, to serve as an honorary professor at CIHE.
Professor David Der-wei WANG
Prof. David WANG obtained his BA in Foreign Languages and Literature from National Taiwan University in 1976, and his MA and PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1978 and 1982 respectively. He taught at National Taiwan University (1982-1986) and Columbia University (1990-2004). He first joined Harvard University in 1986, serving as an Assistant Professor of Chinese for four years. He rejoined the Harvard faculty in 2004, when he was named Edward C. Henderson Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Currently he holds a joint appointment in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Department of Comparative Literature, and is also the Director of Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Inter-University Center for Sinology based at Harvard.
Prof. WANG's research interests include modern and contemporary Chinese literature, late Qing fiction and drama; comparative literary theory; colonial and modern Taiwanese fiction, and Asian American and diasporic literature; plus Chinese intellectuals and artists in the mid-20th century. His recent publications include Taiwan under Japanese Colonial Rule, 1895-1945: History, Culture, Memory (co-edited with Ping-hui Liao, 2007), Global Chinese Literature: Critical Essays (Chinese Overseas: History, Literature, and Society) (co-edited with Jing Tsu, 2010), The Lyrical in Epic Time: Modern Chinese Intellectuals and Artists Through the 1949 Crisis (2014) and A New Literary History of Modern China (2015).
Prof. WANG was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in 2004 and awarded the Changjiang Scholar Award in 2008. In 2020, he was elected a Member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
Professor ZHANG Longxi
Professor ZHANG Longxi is a leading scholar in East-West cross-cultural studies. He holds an MA from Peking University and a Ph. D. from Harvard. He had taught at Peking, Harvard, and the University of California, Riverside, and is currently Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation at City University of Hong Kong. He is an elected foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, and also of Academia Europaea. He is elected President of the International Comparative Literature Association for the term of 2016-19. He is editor of a book series "Canon and World Literature" for Palgrave Macmillan; and co-editor of two book series for Brill, "Brill's Humanities in China" and "East Asian Comparative Literature and Culture." With David Damrosch of Harvard, Theo D'haen of Leuven, and Ronit Ricci of Jerusalem, Zhang Longxi is an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of World Literature; and he also serves on the editorial boards of Modern China; Modern Chinese Literature and Culture; Journal of Chinese Literature and History, and an Advisory Editor of New Literary History. His research interests are East-West cross-cultural studies, Chinese literature, European literature of the Renaissance and the seventeenth century, and world literature. He has published numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles in both English and Chinese.
Professor CHENG Pei-kai
Prof. Pei-kai CHENG, graduated from National Taiwan University in Western Literature, Yale Ph.D in history, taught at State University of New York, Yale, and Pace University for 20 years before founding Chinese Civilization Center at City University of Hong Kong in 1998 and serving as its director until retirement in 2013. He was Chairman of Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Consultation Committee until 2021, and is now Chairman of Hong Kong Branch of Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association. Awarded Merit of Honor by Hong Kong government in 2016, he is University Professor at Fengjia University in Taiwan, and a standing visiting professor at Zhejiang University.
Poet, cultural historian, and calligrapher, he has published more than 30 books, and edited various series of collections on Chinese history and culture. His research interests cover a wide spectrum of academic subjects on Chinese culture, such as late Ming culture and Tang Xianzu, transcultural aesthetics, tea culture, Chinese export porcelain, and English translation of Chinese classics. He is also the founder and Editor-in-chief of Chinese Culture Quarterly since 1986.
