This section sets out the general principles of the arrangements of classes and examinations under the adverse weather conditions. For classes and examinations commencing after 2:00 p.m., students should always refer to the University’s website, http://www.sfu.edu.hk, for the relevant arrangements.

As a general arrangement, when Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1/No. 3 or the Amber/Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted by the Hong Kong Observatory, the following applies:

All classes (including lectures, tutorials, workshop, etc.) and examinations that have commenced or have not commenced:

Classes and examinations will be held as scheduled.

As a general arrangement, when Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 (or above) or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted by the Hong Kong Observatory, the following applies:

For classes (including lectures, tutorials, workshops, etc.) and examinations that have not commenced:

Signal remains in force at or after Classes and Examinations
6:00 a.m. The morning classes and examinations commencing between 9:00 a.m. and 1:59 p.m. will be cancelled.
10:30 a.m. The afternoon classes and examinations commencing between 2:00 p.m. and 6:59 p.m. will be cancelled.
5:00 p.m. The evening classes and examinations commencing at or after 7:00 p.m. will be cancelled.

For classes and examinations that have already commenced:

Black Rainstorm Warning Signal Will continue until the end of the last teaching session. Will continue until the end of the last examination session. Students should stay on campus for their own safety until the end of the last teaching/examination session. If the BLACK Rainstorm Warning Signal still stays in force at the end of the last teaching/examination session, and the weather as well as traffic conditions render it impossible for students to travel home safely, they should take shelter in the Institute premises.

As a general arrangement, when Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 (or above) or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is cancelled, the following applies:

Cancelled at or before 6:00 a.m. Classes and examinations commencing at or after 9:00 a.m. will be held as scheduled.
Cancelled at or before 10:30 a.m. Classes and examinations commencing at or after 2:00 p.m. will be held as scheduled.
Cancelled at or before 5:00 p.m. Classes and examinations commencing at or after 7:00 p.m. will be held as scheduled.

Notes:

  1. The above principles apply to all the classes and examinations of the University. For classes commencing at 2:00 p.m. and finishing by 10:00 p.m., appropriate announcements will be made at the University website. Students should always refer to the University’s website, http://www.sfu.edu.hk, for the relevant arrangements.
  2. Any arrangements for rescheduling examinations due to the above cancellation will be announced through a Student Circular to be posted up on the University’s website: Students are advised to visit the website regularly during the examination period for updated examination arrangements.
